The grand secretary who had made this possible was Zhang Zhuzhen (1525-1582), a strong Chinese leader who was able to rise above the conflicts between the cliques. When Zhang died in 1582, the peace he had so carefully orchestrated gradually fell apart as old conflicts between hard-liners and compromisers rose once again. Yet again, warfare was met with increased wall building.
